Okay, you’ve had a breather and this is where I start pushing you again. I want you to do something by yourself. I would hope that you would choose to go to dinner by yourself but I realize that this may be a step too far for some people. So maybe just a movie or window shopping. Do not take your laptop, iPod or other device to distract you. I want you to be in public with only your thoughts for company.
So what is the point of all of this? We’ve gotten so used to be constantly amused that we’ve forgotten how to be by ourselves. We’ve gotten so uncomfortable with our thoughts that we’re looking for anything to drown them out. Which is crazy because what is the worst thing about being alone with your thoughts? You might actually learn something about yourself.
As for those other people who might give you an odd look – don’t give them a second thought, they’re merely not brave enough to be alone in public. “Do one thing every day that scares you,” Eleanor Roosevelt.
