Be smart about eating out

It’s not realistic to think that you’re never going to eat out again in your life.  Not to mention, life would be pretty boring  if you didn’t socialize and commemorate special occasions.  However, if you could sneak into a professional kitchen and see how your food is prepared, you would absolutely be more careful about ordering with abandon.

A professional kitchen is generally not concerned about making food as healthy as possible, they’re more concerned with making food taste as good as possible.  They are much more liberal with their use of butter, salt and sugar than most of us are at home.  This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it just shouldn’t be indulged in every day.

Still don’t believe me?  Here is the basic recipe for cake frosting:

  • 1 cup shortening or unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Beat together until light and fluffy.

That doesn’t sound too bad until you realize that you’ve just eaten 2 tablespoons of sweetened butter on top of your cupcake – and you just ate two of them.

Before you eat out, visit the restaurant’s website and check out the nutritional content of the food before you go.  It just may save you from that 800 calorie bean and cheese burrito.
